What cars are available for hire in Provence?

Driving through the picturesque landscapes of Provence in a classic car is more than just a journey; it’s an immersion into the region's rich heritage and timeless charm. Imagine cruising under the Provençal sun in "Margaux," a 1990 Citroën 2CV that has journeyed from Paris to bask in the warmth of the South. With the top down and a straw hat on, Margaux perfectly embodies the relaxed and joyful spirit of Provence. Similarly, "Jeannette," another 1990 model, carries the romance of France within its frame. Named after an Australian woman who saw the 2CV as the very symbol of French allure, Jeannette offers a drive steeped in nostalgia and international admiration.

"Miss R," also a 1990 2CV, hails from the vibrant city of Marseille. Despite her youthful appearance, she’s an experienced companion, ready to start her engine with a song-like hum, promising a smooth and engaging drive through the scenic routes of Provence. With each twist and turn, Miss R delights with her responsive handling and spirited character, making every journey feel like an adventure.

Then there’s "Charlotte," a 1980 Citroën 2CV who has gracefully aged like fine wine. At 40 years old, Charlotte is in her element when exploring the lavender fields of the Valensole plateau. She’s not just a car; she’s a loyal companion who revels in the slow-paced discovery of Provence’s hidden gems. Charlotte’s presence adds a layer of vintage charm to your holiday, making every mile a memorable part of the experience.

For those looking for more luxurious or sporty options, Provence also offers an array of other classic cars, each with its distinct personality. The Jaguar E-Type S1 Convertible, for instance, turns heads with its sleek lines and powerful performance, ideal for those seeking both style and excitement. Alternatively, the Mercedes 280SL, available for both touring and weddings, combines luxury with a smooth, effortless drive, perfect for savoring the scenic beauty of Provence. The Porsche 356 Speedster offers an exhilarating ride with a touch of racing heritage, while the Ford Mustang and VW Bus T1 provide iconic and unique options for wedding celebrations, each adding its own flavor to your special day.

Whether you're touring or tying the knot, these classic vehicles are more than just cars; they are an invitation to experience Provence in a way that is both timeless and unforgettable.

We had the pleasure of speaking with the founder of one of our local suppliers to learn more about their passion for vintage cars and love for Provence.

What is your background in classic cars, and how did you get to Provence?

"My father was a chief engineer for Ford many years ago, so I have always loved cars. My first classic was an E-Type Jaguar, which I bought on eBay in the USA on New Year’s Eve. It took a number of years to rebuild it just the way I wanted, with specific upgrades like better brakes and air conditioning. As for how I got to Provence, my wife is French, and she used to spend her holidays with her parents here. It was natural for us to buy a house in Provence over twenty-five years ago. We love it here."

What is your favourite classic car that you have available to rent?

"Probably my favourite rental is the Mercedes Pagoda, with its classic lines and wonderful comfort."

What is your favourite scenic route to take when you drive through Provence?

"I have two favourite scenic routes. One is in The Alpilles, where I live, going through the mountains to Maussane and Les Baux-de-Provence, and then through Saint-Rémy. The other is a similar circular tour in The Luberon, taking in Gordes, Bonnieux, and Lourmarin."

What is your favourite thing about driving through Provence in a classic car?

"I love the relaxed drive. In a classic, you do not need to rush, and no one rushes you."

It is like driving a moving piece of art.

Best routes to take in Provence with a vintage car

Driving a classic car in Provence allows you to explore the region’s diverse landscapes with a sense of style and nostalgia. Here are our top recommended routes in Provence:

Alpilles scenic route

Start on the D5 from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, heading towards Les Baux-de-Provence. Continue on to Maussane-les-Alpilles before looping back to Saint-Rémy. These are narrow, winding roads that require careful driving, especially in a vintage car. The roads are generally two lanes but can feel tight in places. The entire loop can be driven in about one to two hours without stops, but you will want to take your time, especially in Les Baux and Saint-Rémy. Early morning or late afternoon offers the most pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making it easier to navigate the narrow roads.

Luberon circuit

Start in Gordes and follow the D2 towards Roussillon. From there, take the D36 to Bonnieux, and then follow the D109 and D943 to Lourmarin. The roads are well-maintained, with more space compared to The Alpilles. The Luberon circuit features a mix of wider roads and some narrower village streets. Plan for a half-day drive at a minimum. If you stop to explore each village, it can easily turn into a full-day excursion. Visiting in late spring to early autumn is ideal, but try to avoid peak tourist season in July and August. Early mornings offer the best light for photography and a quieter drive.

Route des Crêtes

This route runs along the D141 between La Ciotat and Cassis, perched high above the Mediterranean Sea. The road is narrow and winding, with steep cliffs and sharp turns. It can be challenging but is well worth the effort for the views. The drive itself takes about 45 minutes, but allow extra time for photo stops and possibly a hike in the Calanques. The best time to drive is in late afternoon, offering stunning views as the sun sets over the sea. Be cautious of the wind, which can make driving more challenging.

Wine route from Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Bandol

Start in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, head southeast to Gigondas, and then continue through Beaumes-de-Venise. End the route in Bandol, following the D7N and D559. These are scenic, mostly two-lane roads through vineyards and rolling hills. The roads are generally wider and easier to navigate. A full day is recommended to fully enjoy wine tastings and stops along the way. Autumn is particularly beautiful, with the vineyards in full colour. Consider hiring a private driver if you plan to indulge in the local wines.

Valensole Plateau

The main roads through the plateau are the D6, D8, D56, and D953. The route takes you through the heart of Provence’s lavender country. These are rural roads, often narrow, but with plenty of opportunities to pull over and take in the views. A few hours will suffice for the drive, but to fully appreciate the lavender fields, plan for a half-day with stops. The best time to drive these roads is in late June to early July, just before the lavender harvest.
