Olive oil has been at the heart of Provençal culture for centuries, representing a tradition deeply rooted in the region’s history and landscape.

In the Alpilles, with over 350,000 olive trees shaping its iconic scenery, the art of olive oil production is preserved through time-honoured techniques. This dedication to quality has earned Provençal olive oil a reputation for exceptional flavour, prized both locally and internationally. The olivades season, running from late November to late January, is a time to witness the olive harvest and oil pressing, celebrated with vibrant festivals and markets. However, even during the summer months, many olive oil producers open their doors for guided tours and tastings, offering visitors a chance to engage with this rich tradition throughout the year.

Hear from local expert in olive oil | Charlotte

Charlotte is a dedicated wine and olive oil sommelier whose passion for flavourful, high-quality products makes her one of Provence’s most sought-after guides. Charlotte’s career began in prestigious establishments such as The Bell Inn in the UK, L’Ermitage in Evian, and La Villa Florentine in Lyon. She further honed her expertise as Sommelier Consultant after earning a Wine & Spirits certification from the Université du Vin in Suze-la-Rousse. Over ten years, Charlotte managed La Ferme de la Huppe in Gordes alongside her husband, where her deep appreciation for gastronomy flourished.

Why olive oil?

Inspired by the remarkable quality and versatility of olive oil, Charlotte pursued formal training with LHOVE and the Olive Oil Times, earning her Olive Oil Sommelier certification in London. Today, she is also a certified judge for AOP Provence through the Centre Technique de l’Olivier in Aix-en-Provence. Her passion for olive oil stems from its accessibility and health benefits, describing it as “a remarkable product with endless flavour possibilities.”

Her roots and love for Provence

Though of Spanish heritage from Castilla, Charlotte fell in love with Provence during her wine studies in the Rhône Valley. She now calls Provence home, drawn to its blue skies, vibrant produce, and lifestyle centred around family, friends, and the land.

“I love all high-quality EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)—fresh, balanced, and harmonious, from both hemispheres. With over 2,000 varieties worldwide, there’s always something to discover.”
