Gérard Isirdi’s art graces the walls of many of our villas in Provence, creating a unique atmosphere that connects guests with the spirit of the region.
Known for his Provence-inspired scenes, Isirdi captures the character of local life and landscapes, inviting a deeper connection to the area’s colours, textures, and stories. What are his latest works? Where does he draw his inspiration?
Gérard Isirdi: Provençal painter of life and landscape
Gérard Isirdi’s journey began in Aubagne in 1950, where he was raised as the eleventh of twelve children. Growing up in the village of Roquevaire, south of Aix-en-Provence, Isirdi was surrounded by the very landscapes that once inspired Cézanne. The charm of Provençal life shaped his early years, and he was captivated by the scenes around him: cobbled squares lined with plane trees, lively games of pétanque, and the golden hues of summer afternoons. Without the means to attend art school, Isirdi found his own path, joining a group of local painters known as the Painters of the Huveaune Valley, who offered guidance as he exhibited his first works.
A lifelong exploration of Provence
As he honed his craft, Isirdi developed a distinctive style that fuses local realism with a touch of whimsy, capturing both the vibrant life and serene beauty of Provence. Through his art, Isirdi reveals village markets, hilltop views, vineyard harvests, and quiet courtyards - each piece offering a glimpse into daily life in Provence. His connection to the region is unmistakable, and his pieces are a natural addition to any holiday villa, creating an ambiance that is both luxurious and evocative of the French countryside.
