What do Provençal markets sell?

Provençal markets are renowned for their diverse offerings. Here, you will find everything from fresh, organic produce to handmade crafts by local artisans.

Fruits and vegetables: Look out for the labels ‘bio’ or ‘AB’, which indicate organic options.

Wine and cheese: A true taste of Provence, perfect for indulging or sharing with friends and family.

Honey and olive oil: Essential Provençal staples, each bottle or jar reflecting the flavours of the French countryside.

Breads and pastries: Baked fresh daily, often still warm from the oven.

Lavender and herbs: Signature products of Provence, ideal as gifts or for your own enjoyment.

Art and pottery: Unique pieces crafted by local artists, perfect for bringing a touch of Provence back to your own home.

Fabric and bags: Including the ever-popular straw bags, both practical and stylish for your market shopping.

For those looking to blend in seamlessly with the locals, we recommend purchasing a straw bag for your shopping. These medium-sized bags, typically priced at around eight euros, are a local favourite and a practical choice for carrying your market finds. Do keep in mind that the availability of fresh produce is seasonal. For example, truffle enthusiasts across Provence are eagerly anticipating the upcoming truffle season, which runs from November to March.

What time do Provençal markets open?

Markets in Provence typically open early in the morning, usually from eight in the morning until half past twelve. To experience these markets at their best, we advise arriving before the crowds, which often gather around half past ten.

Where can I find a Provençal market?

While a comprehensive list of Provençal markets can be found at the bottom of this page, we have selected our top markets that we believe should be on your itinerary:

Velleron Farmer’s Market (Monday to Saturday, 18:00 – 20:00)

From April to September, the Velleron Farmer’s Market is a must-visit for those who believe that freshness is key. Consistently ranked among the top 100 markets in France, a visit here guarantees that your basket will be filled with produce harvested only hours before.

Top tip: Since the farmers only sell produce picked that day, the stalls are small. Arrive early to enjoy the best selection.

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Market (Thursday and Sunday, 08:00 – 13:00)

An excellent choice for rainy or cloudy days, Les Halles Market in Avignon is an indoor market that offers a unique experience. In addition to its 40 stalls, the market hosts special events such as shellfish tastings, wine tastings, and live cooking demonstrations, all using ingredients purchased from the market.

Top tip: For convenience, park in the nearby multi-storey car park.

Les Halles d’Avignon (Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 – 13:00)

The perfect morning outing for cloudy or rainy days! Uniquely, Les Halles Market is indoors and home to some amazing events… shellfish tasting experiences, wine tastings and even live cooking demonstrations using ingredients bought from one of the 40 market stalls.

Top tip: park in the nearby multi-storey car park for minimum fuss and bother.

Apt Market (Saturday, 08:00 – 13:00)

Located in the winding streets of Apt, this is the largest market in The Luberon region. With over 300 stalls, it is easy to see why this market is highly regarded. Be sure to seek out the freshly made pastries and the renowned candied fruit, known as fruit confit, which is a particular speciality.

Aix-en-Provence Market (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, 08:00 – 13:00)

This market is a favourite for its variety and setting in the beautiful town of Aix-en-Provence. The market offers everything from clothing and antiques to flowers and food. While exploring the market, take the time to enjoy the town’s stunning fountains and historic architecture.

Top tip: Although the Aix-en-Provence market is open daily, all stalls are fully operational on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
