History of Gordes

Gordes has a rich and unique history that has shaped its distinctive character over the centuries. This village’s renegade spirit was already evident in the 15th century when the locals defied the idea of becoming part of France after the death of their beloved King, Roi René. Fast forward to the Second World War, and Gordes once again stood firm, becoming a centre of resistance against the Nazi occupation and the Vichy government, cementing its reputation as a fiercely independent village.

In the post-war years, Gordes became a magnet for artists, including Marc Chagall, whose New Testament stained glass murals are now renowned across France. Even Picasso admired Chagall, famously saying that he would be the only painter left who truly understood colour. The village’s artistic appeal continued into the 1970s when Victor Vasarely, the "grandfather of art using optical illusion," chose Gordes to open his first art museum. Today, Gordes is a thriving haven for art lovers, with numerous galleries and shops waiting to be explored.

So, are you ready to discover the rebellious spirit and artistic soul of Gordes?

Locals' secret: hidden olive groves

While Gordes can be bustling with visitors, there is a lesser-known spot that offers peace and quiet. Just a short walk from the village centre, you will find a small, hidden path leading to an old olive grove. This secluded area is perfect for a quiet picnic or a moment of reflection away from the crowds. Bring a blanket, some local cheese, and a bottle of Provençal wine, and enjoy the serene beauty of the Gordes countryside in solitude. The secret olive grove can be found by taking a short walk from the village centre towards the path leading to the Village des Bories.

Here’s how to find it:

1. Start at the main square in Gordes, near the Tourist Information Office.

2. Walk along the Route de Cavaillon in the direction of the Village des Bories.

3. After about 700 metres, you will see a small, unmarked path branching off to the right. This path is easy to miss, so keep an eye out for it as it is not heavily trafficked.

4. Follow this path for about 200 metres, and you will find yourself in a serene olive grove, largely untouched by the usual crowds of Gordes.
